Who decides how valuable something is?

We have all seen how much financial value can fluctuate, through the recent credit crisis. Economics would tell us that the value of something is the price that some one else is willing to pay for it. This may not be the true value, for example a home may mean a lot more to some one who built it and raised their family in it, than it does to a new buyer who is taking advantage of the drop in house prices, but that is the measure we have.

So who decides how valuable a person is?
Are some of us more valuable than others?

If we applied the same economic principles that we do to things, then we would say that a person is worth what some one else is willing to “pay for” or “invest” in them.
In such a case that may come through our parents who put all their efforts into providing for our needs, a home, an education, love and time. But does that mean that some children are therefore more valuable than others because their parents have more money?
